Sudoku for Kids (4×4) Rules

The simplest Sudoku: a 4×4 grid with digits 1–4, perfect for children learning the game.

Kids Sudoku uses a 4×4 grid divided into four 2×2 boxes and the digits 1–4. It teaches the core Sudoku idea — fill each row, column and box with no repeats — in a board small enough for young children to finish.

Many kids versions swap digits for pictures or colours, but the rules are identical.

The rules

  1. Fill every cell with a digit from 1 to 4 (or four pictures).
  2. Each row contains 1–4 once.
  3. Each column contains 1–4 once.
  4. Each 2×2 box contains 1–4 once.

A tiny, friendly grid

With only sixteen cells, a 4×4 puzzle can be solved in a couple of minutes, giving quick success that keeps young solvers motivated. It is the natural first step before moving to 6×6 and then 9×9.

Helping a child solve it

Teach one idea at a time: "each row needs all four", then "each column", then "each little box". Point at a nearly-full row and ask which number is missing — that is a beginner-friendly naked single. Then point at a box where a number can only fit one square, which is a hidden single. Naming the move ("look, only one spot is left!") builds the habit of reasoning rather than guessing.

Keep it playful and short. Pictures or colours instead of digits remove the reading barrier for the youngest children while teaching exactly the same logic.

  • Find a row, column or box with just one empty square.
  • Ask which symbol is missing — then place it together.
  • Praise the reasoning, not just the right answer.

Frequently asked questions

What age is 4×4 Sudoku for?
Children around 5–8 typically enjoy it, though it suits any beginner who wants the gentlest introduction.
Can we use pictures instead of numbers?
Yes. Four animals, colours or shapes work exactly like the digits 1–4.
How do I teach a child to solve 4×4 Sudoku?
Start with one rule at a time and look for a row, column or box that has only one empty square — the missing symbol is forced. Name each move out loud so the child learns to reason it out, and keep sessions short and playful. Pictures instead of numbers help pre-readers.
